We Speak Architecture

parti noun
A Parti or Parti pris/ from the French Prendre parti meaning " to make a decision ", often referred to as the big idea , is the chief organizing thought or decision behind an architect's design presented in the form of a basic diagram and / or a simple statement.

Parti defined by Matt Dockendorf

Usually a model. The big idea, an idea with use of the concept helps to come up with a model to show what our basic design would look like. The models are usually small and size and not very detailed, but should be detailed enough to show the basic parts of all designs: entry, circulation, structure, and envelope.

"What is an Architectural Design Parti? Better yet, what is the architectural design parti of you proposal? If you can't answer this question, then you can't really go anywhere. Well, you can go many ways, but you are truly lost. Going home, finding your whereabouts, your direction--that's what it means to become aware of you parti."

What is a Parti?
by Michael Lee Markham

A parti is the result of working through concept and diagram. It is defined as the basic scheme of an architectural design. The parti is not necessarily the end result of concept and diagram, but it is an extraction of information from the two that relates the design to circulation, organization, structure,  hierarchy, site, and form. A parti is used at several stages to test ideas before too much time and effort is put into that concept. It is a three dimensional diagram, in a sense, that can be studied and recalled upon in later times. They are meant to be fast paced test products that generate quick answers to a problem at hand.

The three may each have their own definition, but it is the coalition of the three that makes the process of designing run smoothly, and which ultimately produces a good product.

“A parti is the central idea or concept of a building …A parti diagram can describe massing, entrance, spatial hierarchy…and many other concerns… Some will argue that an ideal parti is wholly inclusive – that it informs every aspect of a building from its original configuration and structural system to the shape of the doorknobs. Others believe that a perfect parti is neither attainable nor desirable.”

What is a Parti?
It's the basic scheme or concept for an architectural design, represented by a diagram or sketch from which an architectural project will be developed. In other words,it's the main underlying idea behind any work of architecture. The word Parti or Parti pris comes from the French Prendre parti which means" to make a decision. It means the big idea or the big organizing thought or decision behind an Architect's design presented in the form of a basic diagram or a simple statement, or both.

Parti is the essence of the project. It's not abstract. A post structuralist diagram is abstract. Parti is only capturing the essence of the project at large.
